Murder victim found: Weslaco man to be formally charged

SAN BENITO — The body of a man found near San Benito has led investigators to a murder suspect.

Janeys Martinez Sol, 46, of Weslaco, is being charged with the murder of Henry Gonzalez, 35, of Mission.

Sol is waiting arraignment.

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department was alerted Thursday to a missing person case from Mission, Sheriff Omar Lucio said yesterday.

“They began investigating and had information that the individual had possibly been brought to Cameron County,” Lucio said.

A search warrant was issued Thursday and after requesting the assistance of a Border Patrol K9 unit, Gonzalez’s body was found Friday in a grave off of FM 2520 outside of San Benito.

The cause of death is still unknown and an autopsy is being conducted.

Investigators were able to identify Gonzalez from his tattoos, clothing and the description provided in the missing person report.

Lucio said Gonzalez is believed to have been dead for eight to 10 days before being found.

Further investigation led police to arrest Sol Saturday in Weslaco for his possible involvement in Gonzalez’s death.

A second person, Jonathan Canales, was arrested for failure to report a felony, authorities said.

It is not currently known if Sol had any priors before being arrested and Lucio said there is currently no known connection between the two.

According to Lucio, the case is still an open investigation and more arrests could be made in the coming days.
