Brownsville Police Department traffic investigators are working to determine whether a 25-year-old man was racing with another vehicle before slamming into a vehicle stopped at a light and killing its driver.

At 1:30 a.m. this morning police say Samuel Trejo Jr. 25, was driving a white Chevy Malibu and crashed into a Brown Pontiac G6 on the 800 block of Boca Chica Boulevard.

The Brown Pontiac G6’s driver, 19-year-old Abel Michael Rose, died at the scene, authorities said. A 22-year-old passenger in the vehicle was transported to Valley Baptis Medical Center -Brownsville with head injuries and a broken arm.

Police charged Trejo this morning with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. Trejo received injuries to his hip and knee and was transported to Valley Baptist as well and hadn’t been arraigned as of 10:30 a.m. this morning, police said.

“It is alleged that the Malibu was possibly racing with a silver Nissan titan pickup, but it has yet to be confirmed,” police said in a press release.

Police Spokesman J.J. Treviño said investigators are canvassing the area for video to look into that allegation.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Boca Chica Boulevard and Coria.

Authorities ordered an autopsy and the case remains under investigation, according to a press release.
