IWFA notebook: Playoff picture developing in IWFA

With just three games remaining in the IWFA regular season, the playoff picture is starting to take shape. As it stands only the top eight teams from both the North Division and the South Division will punch their postseason tickets.

One of those teams in prime position to grab one of those coveted eight spots is the Weslaco Jaguars, who find themselves on top of the South Division standings with a 6-0 record and tied with the San Antonio Legacy.

For the Jaguars, the unblemished record is a long road from where they finished last season, but a mixture of both the new and experienced talent has given them plenty of reasons to celebrate.

“The mix of new talent and old talent coming together with a purpose, a goal and the hunger for the game has helped us along this road,” said owner/player Stephanie Garcia. “Our determination, our effort, our communication and the unity between each other has brought us to where we are today.”

The Jaguars’ remaining schedule features games against the STX Phoenix at home this Saturday, at the Harlingen Honey’s on June 23 and the regular-season finale against the SWTX Mockingjays on June 30.

Another team in line to qualify for the playoffs is the Harlingen Vixens who stand at 4-2 after six games. The Vixens are the returning champions and are looking to win back-to-back championships. However, the schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Vixens who travel to San Antonio to take on the undefeated Legacy on Saturday.

“We are looking forward to the game and we know it’s going to be a great experience,” said Vixen player Brenda Reyna. “We faced them this preseason but physically and mentally I don’t think we were ready, but I want to say that this week we are a lot more prepared than the first time we played them”

The Vixens finish off the regular season against the Laredo Phantasy on June 23 and the Harlingen Honeys on June 30.
