Art Night combines with downtown history tours

HARLINGEN — Downtown Harlingen is prepping for a busy night tonight, when history merges with art.

Harlingen Art Night will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with live music on Lozano Plaza and original art and crafts on display for sale. Food vendors also will be on the scene.

But in addition, the downtown district will be offering “Imagine the Possibilities” free tours to showcase buildings available for sale, lease or rent, as well as the history behind them.

“We have an eight-passenger golf cart that was loaned by RGV Carts and we give tours which take 20 minutes,” said Edward Meza, downtown manager.

Meza said the tours will continue until 9 p.m. and are open to anybody interested in the downtown’s history.

“We’re going to have the downtown office open that evening, and the upstairs is also open and will showcase how it can be used as living quarters or for other uses,” he added.

Meza said the tours are affiliated with the Texas Main Street program, and are being held in conjunction with Historic Preservation Month.

“There will be multiple tours,” Meza said. “People last year, they just enjoyed the history and the history of the buildings, and it’s open for everyone.”
