SAN BENITO — Dollar General, the Fortune 500 corporation which has grown to become one of the most profitable variety store chains by serving small-town America, is weighing its third store for this city.
Documents filed with the state and confirmed by Dollar General show the company is in its “due diligence phase” to locate a new Dollar General off West San Jose Ranch Road near North Sam Houston Boulevard.
“This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet,” said company spokesperson Angela Petkovic. “Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on this by fall 2018.”
Preliminary filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation show the company is prepared to invest $600,000 in a new facility, Store 19876, totaling just over 9,000 square feet.
Dollar General operates more than 14,000 stores in 44 states, and is well-represented in the Valley with more than 80 locations.
In San Benito, it has locations on South Sam Houston Boulevard and 15th Street.
“We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three- to five-mile radius, or 10-minute drive,” Petkovic said. “We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.”
Depending on the type of Dollar General store eventually selected, Petkovic said it would employ between six and 10 workers.
