Cordova clinches spot on bench

BROWNSVILLE — Voters in Cameron and Willacy counties have chosen Aldofo Cordova to replace retiring 197th state District Judge Migdalia Lopez.

Neither Cordova nor challenger Carlos Masso won more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 6 primary election to avoid a runoff.

Unofficial results last night show Cordova defeated Masso, receiving 7,960 votes to Masso’s 5,924 votes, with all precincts in Cameron and Willacy counties reporting.

Cordova said he’s proud of his campaign and thanked his supporters.

“I want to thank the supporters and all the fine people of Cameron and Willacy counties for supporting me,” Cordova said. “I’m very proud of the campaign that we’ve run, and I’m happy that we were successful.”

Masso thanked all the voters who believed he would be a fair and impartial judge.

“I want to thank everybody that came out and supported me and although we came out a little short, you know, I still want to thank them for believing in me and knowing that I could be that fair and impartial judge that they wanted out there,” Masso said.

“Unfortunately, we came out a little bit short, but it still shows that I have a lot of support in the county and a lot of people who believe in me, and I thank them for supporting me and we’ll see what is in store for the future.”

Cordova does not face a Republican challenger in the November general election.
