Time to help out Speech Drama Debate team

HARLINGEN – The South Speech Drama Debate Team is having an encore presentation and trying to raise some money, too.

The Harlingen High School South organization is hosting its 4th Annual Showcase and Fundraiser featuring an encore presentation of “Side Man.”

The team is hoping to bring as many people out as they can. It is the first time it is being held at the PAC.

The One-Act play, led by cast member James Gracia, won the state championship in the UIL 6A event. Cast members also include Savannah Smith, Christian Ingram, Natalie Perez, John Duncan, Nathaniel Carney, Mark Colmenares and crew members Christopher Smith, Elizabeth Everett, Carmela Benavides, Christian Villareal, Ramiro Gonzalez and directors Maegan Conley and Julia Wise.

The event is set for tomorrow night, starting at 6:30 p.m. with the opening of the silent auction. At 7 p.m., there will be a performance of “Side Man.” There will be appetizers at intermission. At 8 p.m., there will be a showcase.

This showcase presents a unique opportunity to the Harlingen community to better understand what the speech, drama and debate students do on many weekends. This will feature students who either were finalists at the Texas Forensic Association State Tournament or qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament.

Money raised from the event will be used for several purposes, related to competitive preparedness. It will be used for summer camp scholarships, to hire consultants for a camp to be held at South for high school and middle school students and will be used to purchase materials for the 2018-19 school year.
