HARLINGEN — Each year, the second Saturday in May, letter carriers do more than deliver the mail.
Locally, they pick up thousands of pounds of nonperishable food items as a way to help out the Harlingen Neighborhood Food Pantry.
Called Stamp Out Hunger, this program, which is in its 26th year, relies on people to leave a bag of items next to their mailboxes.
The food drive is held all around the country and Harlingen’s Post Office will once again participate and the local pantry will benefit.
Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest one-day food drive. It provides letter carriers, postal employees and volunteers an opportunity to come together to conduct the drive in their local communities. During the past 25 food drives, letter carriers have collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food.
