Brownsville students win in state art contest

BROWNSVILLE — Three Brownsville students were among the dozens of winners in this year’s 2018 Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest.

The annual competition encourages students to learn more about the Texas coast. In all 2,480 student submitted artwork and 40 were selected as winners.

Marijose Rosas, a student at the Visual Arts Academy, was named a finalist in the 3rd and 4th grade category. Her artwork depicts a sunset over the Laguna Madre with the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway in the distance, seagulls flying and a sailboat with a Texas flag.

Jose Rosas, also of the Visual Arts Academy, was named a runner-up in the 5th grade category with his artwork of the South Padre Island coast with condominiums, clouds and seagulls.

In the 6th grade division Ashley Barragan, a student at Lucio Middle School was a finalist. Her painting illustrates a young girl carrying a camera and bag as she walks towards the beach on one of the Island’s many boardwalks. The sky and water are beautiful shades of green and the boardwalk is surrounded by lush green sea grasses.

They were the only winners from South Texas.

“ This contest is a great way for young Texans to show their artistic skill and vision while learning about the natural beauty of our precious coast,” said Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.

The three area students will each receive a ticket to the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, a ticket to the Houston Zoo, two all day passes to Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels, prizes and a certificate of recognition from the Texas General Land Office and a calendar displaying the winning artwork.
