Fitness expo to kick off exercise program

SAN BENITO — Become a more active you.

Residents looking to lead a more active lifestyle can join a two-decade long event.

Cameron County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office is teaming up with the San Benito Chamber of Commerce to host the Walk Across Texas Kick Off event April 28.

Walk Across Texas began in 1996 with the goal to help Texans establish a habit of regular activity.

Participants are tasked with noting down physical activity they accomplish during the eight-week program to complete 830 miles worth of activity or the equivalent distance from one end of Texas to the other.

The program is open to all ages and is encouraged to be done in teams.

While the word walk is in its name, the program encourages all types of activities.

Participants can use the website’s conversion calculator to calculate different activities such as cleaning, gardening or dancing and convert the mileage and calories lost.

For teams of eight, each person would need to average 13 miles per week to reach the stated goal.

San Benito Chamber of Commerce will host a Healthy Living and Fitness Expo to kick off the program.

Hopeful participants can register during the expo and start working toward their goal right away during the 5K.

The expo will also host different vendors and information on healthy meal preparation, body mass measurement and fitness demonstrations.

Fun activities will be available for children along with a nutritionist presentation, food and giveaways.
