Congratulations, Chess Champs!

Two San Benito third graders and chess players, Kaitlynn McNutt and Luis Miramontes, hold the “Championship Trophy” after finishing with a tie of 6.5 wins out of 7 in the K-3 Championship Division at the 2018 South Texas Scholastic Chess Championships in Edinburg. Over 1,300 students from throughout Texas competed. Both share the title.

Both players went undefeated up to last round when they both were paired to play one another. Both drew, giving them 6.5 points out of 7. In a tie breaker, McNutt earned first place, and Miramontes received co-champion honors.

Miramontes also holds the 2018 Region 8 Scholastic Chess Championship title for the K-3 Division from a competition in January.

McNutt attends school at Dr. C.M. Cash Elementary and Miramontes attends school at Dr. Raul Garza, Jr. Elementary.
