Baseball notes: Rain forces change of plans for area teams

Tuesday’s early rain fall wreaked havoc on area baseball games scheduled to take place later in the evening.

Harlingen South (2-6), which is fighting to reverse some recent disappointing results, was scheduled to play Weslaco High. However, due to a soggy field, the game was postponed to Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Hawks will play the Panthers in back-to-back games on Thursday (home) and Friday at Weslaco.

The San Benito Greyhounds also had to alter their plans due to the rain. The Hounds were scheduled to play at Brownsville Hanna, however the game was moved to a later time; details to come. Friday’s home game against Hanna will go on as regularly scheduled.

One game that went on as scheduled was Harlingen High at Los Fresnos. The Falcons were able to shut out the Cardinals in a 1-0 victory thanks to Los Fresnos ace JJ Sanchez, who threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

With the victory, the Falcons improved to 7-2 in District 32-6A play while the Cardinals fell to 3-6.

LYFORD: The Bulldogs managed to avoid a postponement on Tuesday at home against Monte Alto, however due to problems with the stadium lights the game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth with Lyford leading 8-2. Bulldogs head coach Chris Cervantes said Tuesday that school athletic directors were going to meet today to discuss whether the game would be continued.
