Autopsy finds baby died of natural causes

LYFORD — An investigation has found an 8-month-old baby died of natural causes at a local day care center.

Yesterday, Police Chief Andres Maldonado said an autopsy report determined the girl died Feb. 14 of complications from a viral lung disease and a lung hemorrhage.

Maldonado said the baby was pronounced dead at a local hospital after a worker found the infant non-responsive at Kidsville Learning Center.

In February, he said, preliminary autopsy reports found no signs of trauma.

However, the case was investigated as a homicide until final autopsy results were released this week, Maldonado said.

Now, he said, no criminal charges will be filed in the case.

The Willacy County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Rangers are participating in the investigation, he said

The day care center, which decided to close for three days following the baby’s death, remained open throughout the course of the investigation.
