Boot camp to help small business owners

SAN BENITO — The Women’s Business Center of Cameron County is partnering up with the San Benito Chamber of Commerce to host its annual Small Business Boot Camp.

Six weekly sessions will allow small business owners and potential business owners to learn everything there is to know about running a small business.

Everything from financing and contracts to utilizing social media and marketing will be taught by guest lecturers who are experts in their field.

The boot camp was initially started by the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce 10 years ago before the Women’s Business Center of Cameron County took over last year.

In its first year, the center graduated 81 entrepreneurs from the boot camp.

Andrea Benton, executive director of the Women’s Business Center, said the objective of the program is to provide knowledge and resources for attendees to create an action plan going forward.

“The goal of the Women’s Business Center is to enable and empower women entrepreneurs by providing programs and the boot camp is a way to carry out that mission,” Benton said.

While the event is hosted by the Women’s Business Center, men are also welcome to attend.

Benton said she expects 10 to 20 people to sign up for the boot camp.

Over the six-week program, attendees will learn about the different aspects to create, maintain and manage a successful small business.

Every boot camp teaches the same topics, but is updated to reflect the market.

“We try to implement innovative topics that are related to what we’re trying to train them on,” Benton said.

Benton said in addition to the training, attendees develop professional relationships and create a professional network of support in helping them move forward with their action plan.
