The 43rd annual Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association Meet of Champions track & field meet begins today with a slew of preliminaries across the Rio GrandeValley.
The Class 6A boys prelims will be held at PSJA Stadium in Pharr while the Class 6A girls prelims will be at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.
Meanwhile, the Class 5A girls and boys prelims will be at Edcouch-Elsa and the Class 4A and sub-4A meet will be run at La Feria.
The finals for all divisions will be held in Weslaco on Saturday.
Qualifications for the finals are set. There will only be one heat of eight runners per event in the finals. Four runners from 6A, two from 5A, and two from 4A to private schools in all sprints, relays and field events. This is a drop from last year’s 16 per event.
However, qualifications for the distance race finals have already been decided. Runners have automatic qualification due to times posted through the season and verified on RGVCA.net.
The 6A 800-meter boys qualifiers are: Felix Perez (Mission) with a time of 1:58.30; Art Benavides (Harlingen) 1:58.40; Paco Rodriguez (McAllen) 1:59.10; Antonio Sanchez (Weslaco)1:59.10; Ruben Chapa (Rivera) 1:59.20; Juan Orozco (PSJA North) 1:59.30; Augustus Martiello (Mission) 2:02.20 and Marlon Casas (La Joya) 2:02.50.
The 6A 800-meter girls qualifiers are: Bailey Villalon (La Joya) 02:18.62; Aaliya Garza (Weslaco) 2:21.32; Liliana Perez (Vela) 2:24.70; Marielena Diaz(Weslaco) 2:25.94; Macy Henderson (McAllen Memorial 2:26.22; Tessie Garcia (Weslaco) 2:26.97 Natalie Garcia (Weslaco) 2:27.38; Oma Sancez (La Joya) 2:27.83.
The 6A 1600-meter boys qualifiers are: Cruz Gomez (PSJA Memorial) 4:16.26; Tristian Pena (Edinburg)4:25.13; Art Benavides (Harlingen) 4:30.27; Evan Williams (McAllen) 4:31.76; Trevor Williams (McAllen) 4:32.18; Leo Pena (Hanna) 4:32.32; Paco Rodriguez (McAllen) 4:33.32 and Edward Ramos of Harlingen 4:34.48.
The 6A 3200 boys qualifiers are: Cruz Gomez (PSJA Memorial) 9:24.80; Tristian Pena (Edinburg North) 9:38.50; Marco Castro (Mission) 9:47.20; Evan Williams (McAllen Memorial) 9:49.90; Leo Pena (Hanna) 9:52.00; Joaquin Medina (San Benito) 9:53.90; Antonio Sanchez (Weslaco) 9:54.80; Fernando Escobar (Harlingen) 9:55.80.
