The Rio Hondo Bobcats soccer program has had an impressive start. In just its second year of existence, the Bobcats have made the playoffs in back-to-back fashion.
Last year, the Bobcats made the postseason in their inaugural season, but lost in the in the bi-district round to a tough Progreso program that made it to the UIL state final four.
This year, the Bobcats take on Grulla in the opening round on March 29 with time and location yet to be determined.
“I think it’s a testament to the players buying into the program philosophy of playing for each other and leaving it all on the field,” said Rio Hondo head coach Candido Ochoa. “We have a special group of seniors along with some underclassmen that are hungry to leave their mark in the early history of our soccer program.
“They are talented athletes that are learning a new sport and doing a great job of picking up the beautiful game. I can genuinely say that my team loves the game and enjoys going to battle with each other.”
LA FERIA: The Lions are headed back to the playoffs this season. Last year, the program made history with its march to the regional semifinal, beating Zapata (bi-district), Somerset (area round) and Grulla (regional quarterfinals) before eventually losing to Bandera in the regional semifinals in penalty kicks.
After winning the District 31-4A title for the second consecutive year this season, the Lions turn their attention to the first round of the playoffs where they take on Zapata next week with time and location yet to be determined.
