Mock tornado drill held this morning

HARLINGEN — National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville held a mock tornado drill this morning sometime around 11 a.m.

The drill is intended to exercise safety plans and allow Rio Grande Valley residents to determine if they can receive a warning and what protective actions they can take.

Schools, too, are encouraged to join what amounts to a kickoff to severe weather season in South Texas.

“When the tornado warning for the drill is issued, schools throughout the Rio Grande Valley are encouraged to participate by conducting a tornado drill and putting their severe weather emergency preparedness plan into effect,” the weather service reported.

The mock tornado alert was in effect for 15 minutes.
