Lady Falcons soar past Lady Cardinals in penalty kicks

HARLINGEN — The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons and the Harlingen Lady Hawks played to a 2-2 draw before heading into overtime and eventually penalty kicks.

Los Fresnos’ goalkeeper Sabrina Hinojosa came up with some big saves to give the Lady Falcons a 3-2 (5-4 PKs) victory on Friday evening at Boggus Stadium.

With the win, Los Fresnos improved to 8-1 with 23 points and remain on top of the District 32-6A standings. Harlingen South (5-4) took the loss but gained a point to move level with Harlingen High with 18 points.

“Coming from our last loss to South we knew they were going to come out very aggressive and very fast so I had to make sure what we had had to match, and be twice as fast and twice as aggressive as South,” said Los Fresnos head coach Patricia Hernandez. “We knew from the first whistle that it was going to be an intense game.

“Right now in our district you don’t have any off games and you have to be on every single game because on any given night a game like tonight can happen.”

The Lady Falcons started the match strong after Itzel Bochas put Los Fresnos up 1-0 within five minutes of starting the contest.

However, the score wouldn’t hold for very long. With 27 minutes remaining in the first half, South responded with a goal of its own. Six minutes later the Lady Hawks struck again.

With 21 minutes left in the first half, Caroline Grannum put South up after she beat Los Fresnos’ backline and beat Hinojosa to the far post.

But South’s lead was short-lived as Brianna Garza scored for the Lady Falcons in the second half.
