HARLINGEN — Harlingen police took 23 kilograms of methamphetamine off the streets.
A basic traffic stop this past Friday night on the 1100 block of N. Expressway 77 at around 9 p.m. led to the narcotics seizure.
Weight of the methamphetamine totaled approximately 23 kilograms with an estimated street value of $700,000 dollars.
After searching the vehicle, 18 kilos of methamphetamine and approximately 5 kilos of liquid methamphetamine were discovered.
The driver and passenger were arrested and transferred to federal custody pending arraignment.
According to a press release, due to the nature and weight of the narcotics, The Department of Homeland Security Investigations was contacted and adopted the case to be filed as a federal crime.
The release said, an HPD K-9 indicated there were drugs present in the vehicle.
The vehicle was transported to the Harlingen Police Department for processing.
Police said the packages and the containers with the methamphetamine were field tested for methamphetamine which tested positive.
