Runaway national debt
As a 95-year-old WWII veteran, I have followed politics since Herbert Hoover lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt I don’t think it has ever been like it is now. I can remember an ad when Roosevelt ran against Kansas Gov. Alf Landon, a Republican, in 1936. It was a picture of a man showing a bill to a gasping people. It showed them that they owed $75 million and this man represented the national debt. The ad did no good, as Roosevelt won in a landslide (only Maine and Vermont went Republican that election.)
People seem pleased that both parties agreed on a spending bill that continues to increase the debt well into the double-digit trillions. I can see some of this as necessary for national defense, but it is time to think about our grandchildren. I am no expert, but it seems that both parties could help here. The Democrats think that every problem can be solved by throwing money at it, and some Republicans are OK with spending money on things like a border wall to separate us from Mexico. I am puzzled by the fact that someone does not point out that building a wall on the Rio Grande would give the entire river to Mexico.
This debt will not be my problem but I am concerned about my great-grandchildren.

Support for Joseph Palacios
At a time when local politics seems to let us down, congratulations for the recent groundbreaking road ceremonies go to Hidalgo County Commissioner Joseph Palacios. This multi-lane road going from N. 10th Street to Monte Cristo Road is proof in the pudding. Let’s not go back to a time when we let personal innuendo and embittered self-sainthood distort real results. Let’s keep Commissioner Palacios so he can continue improving conditions in Precinct 4. Let’s keep the angry candidates who we already booted out, out!

County drainage ‘flim-flam’
Congratulations to Godfrey Garza Jr. It looks like you may be on your way to one of the biggest flim-flams in RGV history. You did very well to get a salary, and percentage of all county drainage money spent, for your company Integ Corp., of which you are the only employee.
But that didn’t appear to be enough and so you talked your way into receiving $700,000 for Integ Corp., to run the Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority.
I really find it hard to believe that you were able to pull this off all by yourself.
Enjoy your money, if you have any left after paying your attorneys.
By the way, did you pay all of your taxes?
