Lady Cardinals’ Alyssa Cervantes key in team’s playoff victory

Harlingen High’s Alyssa Cervantes was nearly flawless in her bi-district performance against PSJA North on Monday. The junior jumpstarted the Lady Cardinals’ offense and racked up seven of Harlingen’s 11 points in the first quarter.

Cervantes finished the contest with a game high 21 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and grabbed two steals as Harlingen defeated the Lady Raiders 66-41.

For her rock-solid performance, Cervantes is this week’s Valley Morning Star girls Player of the Week.

“Alyssa is a smart player who knows when it’s her time to step up and lead her team,” said Harlingen head coach Ashley Moncivaiz. “She is an unselfish player who is willing to play inside and guard taller opponents.”

Monday’s impressive showing wasn’t the junior’s first time stepping up in a big way. In fact, it was her second double-double of the season.

With Monday’s win, Harlingen moved on to the area round and takes on South San Antonio at 6 tonight at CC Veterans Memorial High School.

The last time the Lady Cardinals reached the regional quarterfinals was during the 2015-16 season.
