Girls basketball notes: Let the second round begin

With the bi-district playoff round in the books, it’s time to catch up with who is moving on to the area round.

A total of five teams across three classes from our area are still alive and kicking.

SANTA MARIA: The Lady Cougars continued their winning ways after crushing Ben Bolt 62-33 on Tuesday. In the win, Yazmin Cantu continued to shine as she scored 19 points and hauled in 16 rebounds. Meanwhile, Lorena Ayala added 12 points and 10 steals, and Keana Ortiz contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

The win improved the Lady Cougars to 27-2 overall and they will now face Port Aransas at 6 p.m. Friday at Bishop High School.

LYFORD: Coach Teresa Gutierrez and her Lady Bulldogs head into the area round on an eight-game win streak.

This past Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Santa Rosa in a first-place seeding game and then turned around and beat Corpus Christi London 39-34 in their playoff opener on Tuesday.

Sydney Bray had a team-high 12 points in the victory while teammate Jessica Mendez added eight.

Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is an area-round date against Skidmore-Tynan. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Friday at Kingsville King High School.

SANTA ROSA: Sticking in Class 3A, Santa Rosa narrowly defeated Banquete 54-53 in a thrilling bi-district contest on Tuesday. Mariah Contreras led the way for the Lady Warriors with 17 points while teammates Cheyenne Rodriguez added 12, Skyler Torres contributed 10 and Faviana Gomez scored seven points.

The Lady Warriors now set their sights on Odem. Tipoff is set for 7 on Friday night at Alice High school.

HARLINGEN HIGH: The Harlingen Lady Cardinals began their playoff push against PSJA North on Monday. The Lady Cards had three double-digit scorers and a rejuvenated team performance.

Alyssa Cervantes had a standout night in the win as she scored a game high 21 points. Meanwhile junior teammate Taegan Dickey cashed in 14 points, Nadia Flores added 12 and Ariel Leal scored another 12 points as the Lady Cardinals easily defeated the Lady Raiders 66-41.

With the win Harlingen moves onto the second round of the playoffs and will take on South San Antonio at 7 p.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial High School.

SAN BENITO: Another 6A school that breezed by its bi-district competition was San Benito. The Lady Greyhounds defeated Edinburg Vela 61-32 on Tuesday.

Senior Miranda Vallejo led the Lady Hounds with a game high 20 points, while junior Haley Lopez added 13 points, Emilee Barraza contributed 11 and Arlene Lucero pumped in 10 points.

The Lady Hounds will now face Laredo Alexander at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Carroll High School.
