Lady Hawks look to end season on high note

While the San Benito at Harlingen High girls basketball game looks to be the featured contest of the week, there are plenty of other athletic events on tap worthy of attention.

The Harlingen South Lady Hawks wrap up their 2017-18 season tonight at Brownsville Rivera. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. In their last meeting, the Lady Hawks beat the Lady Raiders 53-26. Unfortunately, that Jan. 12 victory was the last one the Lady Green Birds saw until this past Friday when they finally snapped a five-game skid with a 35-30 win over Weslaco East. It was that unfortunate tailspin that caused the Lady Hawks to fall out of playoff contention as the absence of sophomore star Karla Reyes midway through the season was simply too much to overcome. This is the first time in several seasons that the Lady Hawks have failed to qualify for the postseason.

HAWKS AND CARDS FACE CRUCIAL TESTS:

The District 32-6A title along with the top seed in the playoffs was clinched by the Los Fresnos Falcons last week. However, the remaining playoff spots are still very much up for grabs with Harlingen High, Harlingen South, Brownsville Rivera and Weslaco High all tied at 7-4 with three games remaining. The Hawks begin this pivotal week at Rivera tonight before hosting Harlingen High on Friday. Meanwhile, the Cardinals host San Benito this evening before taking on South. In their last meeting, the Cards beat the Hawks 62-58.

SOFTBALL SCRIMMAGES:

The 2018 softball season does’t officially get underway until next week, however there are a few juicy preseason scrimmages set for this week including Harlingen High at Edinburg North, which is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Both the Lady Cards and Lady Cougars have plenty of returning talent and are looking to have strong seasons. Meanwhile, the always tough San Benito Lady Greyhounds are also busy this week as they face Mercedes and former head coach Kristy Leal on Tuesday at 6:30 before hosting Sharyland on Friday, also at 6:30. Finally, the Harlingen South Lady Hawks, who were at McAllen Memorial on Monday, are at Edinburg High at 6 p.m. on Friday.

LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK:

After a disappointing District 32-6A shootout loss to Brownsville Hanna this past Friday, the Harlingen South Lady Hawks soccer squad looks to rebound tonight at San Benito in a match set to begin at 7:30 at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The Lady Hawks conclude the week on Friday with a home match against Weslaco High.
