BROWNSVILLE — As the deadline to pay property tax fast approaches, there are more than 70,000 personal property and real estate accounts totaling more than $81 million that have yet to be paid.
“We want everyone to pay their taxes or to take advantage of various payment plan options our office provides, before they accrue penalties and interest starting … February 1,” Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr. said in a press release.
Wednesday is the deadline before delinquency.
The 73,189 near-delinquent accounts are roughly one-quarter of Cameron County’s property tax revenue.
“Taxpayers can pay their taxes online at www.cameroncountytax.org or at any of our 9 branch offices countywide,” Yzaguirre said.
Starting Feb. 1, all delinquent accounts that haven’t been paid in full will accrue a 7-percent fee for penalties and interest.
If a property owner hasn’t received a tax statement, they should immediately contact the Tax Assessor-Collector’s office by calling (956) 544-0800.
There are drop-off boxes that are accessible all hours of the day. Payments made by check or money orders can be made at the Brownsville Main Office in the old Wells Fargo building on East Levee Street; at the Port Isabel Branch Office at 505 Highway 100; or at the new Los Fresnos Branch Office at 745 W. Ocean Blvd.
“It is very important to pay all property taxes this year, because our office will continue with our aggressive collection programs this year,” Yzaguirre said.
Cameron County residents can also make payments at other tax offices in Brownsville, Harlingen, San Benito, Los Fresnos, Port Isabel, La Feria and Rio Hondo.
