Boaters, swimmers on alert along gulf

HARLIGNEN — A small craft advisory has been issued for gulf waters from the Rio Grande north to Port Mansfield.

National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville say moderate winds and high seas will continue until about 3 p.m. as another surge of northerly flow enters the Rio Grande Valley.

Those winds will be around 20 knots in strength and seas will be between six and eight feet.

Inexperienced captains, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid gulf waters while these conditions prevail.

Along gulf beaches, a high risk of rip currents also is forecast today.
