Local schools finalist for excellence awards

HARLINGEN — The Harlingen school district has learned it’s made the cut of a popular retailer.

H-E-B has included Harlingen schools in a list of only five large districts in Texas to be recognized for success in teaching local children.

Those five school districts are finalists in the 2018 Excellence in Education Awards program. McAllen is also included in that list of school districts.

In addition, the Harlingen school board is included in another list of five, and Superintendent Art Cavazos said he was “super proud” of board members.

“It is their leadership and support that has led us to the transformation we see today, and the changes we will see tomorrow on behalf of our students,” he said.

“This prestigious award exemplifies our board’s unrelenting commitment to each of our students and speaks volumes of their resolve in preparing them for global achievement.”

A press release from H-E-B said a panel of judges would determine winners by visiting each district, early childhood facility and school board.

Winners will be announced at the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony on May 5 at the Marriott Marquis in Houston.

The winning large district will receive $100,000; the winning small district $50,000.

An early childhood facility will receive $25,000.

If selected, one or more school boards will receive up to a total of $25,000.
