Thanks in part to some inspiring individual performances, the San Benito Lady Greyhounds basketball team is tied for second place in District 32-6A.
And one component that has led to the Lady Hounds’ success thus far has been the offensive production of senior MirandaVallejo.
This week Vallejo put in another pair of impressive performances against Weslaco East and Brownsville Rivera racking up 34 points, 12 assists, 13 rebounds and eight steals.
For her efforts, she was named the girls Valley Morning Star Player of the Week.
“Miranda had aspirations of being a top player this year and she really worked hard in the offseason to do that,” said San Benito head coach AbelMoreno. “Basketball wise, one of the most important things about her is that she is very cerebral and has a very high IQ of basketball. She is able to score a lot of her points on just making adjustments with the team or within herself. Plus it doesn’t hurt to have one of the meanest mid-range jumpers I’ve seen in a long time.
“She has actually built her game around it and hasn’t tried to be anybody she’s not. I wouldn’t say she is the best in the Valley because there are a lot of really good players, but she is definitely one of the best.”
The senior’s ability to take over games and control the tempo has given San Benito a weapon teams can’t afford to ignore.
“Teams plan for her and when we play them they have to know where No. 23 is,” said Moreno. “There are times when they just try to take her out of the game and make us beat them with the rest of the team, and she has recognized that and instead of just trying to be the scorer she is able to get the ball to her teammates and help the team out.”
