Armed robbery suspect caught hiding in sugarcane field

OLMITO — A 19-year-old man is behind bars after he allegedly stole another man’s money and Hummer at gunpoint and then apparently had a change of heart and returned the SUV the next day.

During a news conference this afternoon, Cameron County Sherriff Omar Lucio said they don’t know why Gerson Salazar took the money and vehicle from a La Feria resident. They say he was armed with a gun when he approached the victim at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Salazar was found Tuesday afternoon hiding in a nearby sugarcane field after the owner of the Hummer called police that Salazar returned the vehicle and left it in his driveway.

Authorities say they tracked Salazar down with the help of a U.S. Border Patrol canine unit.

Salazar was given a bond of $100,000 for aggravated robbery and another for $750,000 for unauthorized use of a vehicle.
