PITCH PERFECT: Harlingen-Harlingen South hit the soccer field this weekend in boy/girls doubleheader

High school basketball may be the sport that’s in full swing right now, but on Friday it’s soccer that takes center stage when Harlingen and Harlingen South face off in a boys/girls doubleheader at Boggus Stadium.

The boys match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and the girls take to the pitch at 7:30.

Not only is Friday’s contest a big rivalry match between fierce intracity opponents, it also opens the District 32-6A season.

FIGHT NIGHT:

Weslaco and Harlingen face off tonight in a huge boys/girls basketball doubleheader at Harlingen High. The Lady Panthers and Lady Cards open things up at 6 p.m. while the boys game tips off at 7:30 p.m. The girls match is pivotal as both teams enter the contest tied for first place in District 32-6A at 8-1. In their first meeting on Dec. 19, the Lady Panthers nipped the Lady Cards 44-42 at Weslaco High. The Lady Panthers enter tonight’s game riding a three-game win streak while the Lady Cards are on a six-game streak and have not lost a game since the loss to Weslaco. Meanwhile, on the boys side, both the Panthers and Cardinals are looking to keep pace with league-leading Los Fresnos. After winning four in a row, the Cardinals (5-2) were cooled off this past Friday by Brownsville Rivera, which beat them 71-57.

IN NEED OF WINS:

Times have been tough for the Harlingen South Hawks and Lady Hawks. The Lady Hawks have dropped their last two in a row while the Hawks have lost their last three straight after beginning the 32-6A season a perfect 4-0. Both teams will look to rebound tonight when they head to Brownsville to take on Hanna in a boys/girls doubleheader. The girls tip off at 6 and the boys at 7:30.
