San Benito bakery reopens after holiday fire

For fans of La Especial Bakery in San Benito today is a good day.

The popular panaderia, also known as Ornelas Bakery, reopened this afternoon after suffering a large fire last month. It has been in business for 80 years.

On the bakery’s Facebook page, family posted photographs of the first batch of cookies that came out of the ovens this afternoon.

A fire broke out in the bakery on the night of Dec. 30. Owner Enrique “Kike” Ornelas, and a police officer, Miguel Leal, were both taken to the hospital.

Because of the age of the bakery and the large ovens, insurance companies stopped covering fire damage in the late 1980s.

Orneleas estimated the fire caused $40,000 in damage. Earlier this month a BBQ fundraiser was held to help the owners reopen.
