San Benito, surrounding areas without power

Virtually everyone in San Benito has been without power for hours tonight and some residents are sitting in their parked cars with the heaters on in order to stay warm.

According to the AEP Texas website, more than 7,600 customers in San Benito, Rio Hondo, Rangerville, Los Indios, La Paloma, Lozano and Green Valley Farms have no electricity.

The power went out shortly after 5 p.m. in a region that stretches from Paso Real to south of FM 732 and from Rio Hondo to U.S. Military Highway 281.

Crews posted stop signs in all the major intersections in San Benito.

An additional outage is being reported La Feria where nearly 1,400 customers have no power. The outage spans from Grand Acres south of Santa Rosa to the Military Highway.

AEP Texas is also reporting sporatic outages from Rio Grande City to Edinburg, and Raymondville to Weslaco.

There is no word yet on when power will be restored.
