The battle continues: Lady Hawks, Lady Cards duel as 2nd half of district play begins

The second half of the District 32-6A girls basketball season gets underway tonight with the Harlingen Lady Cardinals hosting the Harlingen South Lady Hawks. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Lady Hawks enter today’s contest with a 4-3 league mark and have won their last two in a row with victories against Weslaco East and Brownsville Rivera. The Lady Cardinals, meanwhile, are 6-1 in conference play and tied for the 32-6A lead along with Weslaco High and San Benito. Since dropping a close one to Weslaco on Dec. 19, the Lady Red Birds have won their last four straight including a big 51-43 win over San Benito this past Friday.

In their last meeting on Dec. 12, the Lady Cards went into the Lady Hawks gym and walked out with a 58-42 victory. Today’s meeting, however, is actually the third between the intracity rivals. On Nov. 11, Harlingen beat South 52-40 in the Mid-Valley Classic.

DON’T FORGET THE BOYS:

The South and Harlingen boys also duel tonight with the Cards hosting the Hawks immediately following the girls game at 7:30.

The Cardinals enter the game at 4-1 in 32-6A play and have won their last two in a row and last five of six. Their most recent victory came this past Friday with a 71-53 win at San Benito. As for the Hawks, they also enter today contest at 4-1 in league play after dropping their first conference game of the season last Friday to Brownsville Rivera.

FALCONS LOOK TO STAY PERFECT:

Thanks to a huge 54-43 road win over Weslaco High on Friday, the Los Fresnos Falcons improved to 5-0 in District 32-6A. They will now look to stay atop the league standings when they host San Benito at 7:30 tonight. The Falcons have been red hot lately and are riding an eight-game win streak dating back to Dec. 16. The last team they lost to was Brownsville Pace in the McAllen City of Palms Tournament.

LADY HOUNDS LOOK TO REBOUND:

After a huge upset win at Weslaco High last Tuesday catapulted the San Benito Lady Greyhounds into first play in District 32-6A, the Lady Hounds failed to keep momentum going as they fell to Harlingen High on Friday. The loss dropped SB into a three-way tie for first place along with Harlingen and Weslaco, which are all 6-1. The Lady Hounds will now look to keep pace as they head to Los Fresnos tonight. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. The Lady Falcons enter the contest at 3-4 in league play and have been up and down as of late going 2-2 in their four outings.

IT’S ALSO SOCCER SEASON:

While the season is still young, the high school soccer season is upon us and the Harlingen Cardinals host the Rio Hondo Bobcats at 7 p.m. today at Boggus Stadium. The Bobcats are team on the rise after making the postseason in their inaugural season last year. They return a total of eight starters, including Jose Meza, Jimmy Weaver, Edgar Marrioquin, Matt Cuellar, Alfonso Lopez and Oscar Cabello. The team also features some new talent like football star Eric Pizarro.
