First milk depot opens in Cameron County

SAN BENITO — Cameron County opened its first Mother’s Milk Depot Site today.

Mothers in the Valley with excess breast milk can now begin the donation process to help premature babies receive milk they would otherwise have to go without.

Babies born prematurely in the United States have grown with 10.2 percent of all babies in Texas being born early. That number jumps to 11.3 percent for babies born in Cameron County.

The milk depot will work in connection with the milk bank in Austin.

Mothers wishing to donate must first contact the milk bank in Austin for basic screenings and milk testing before being able to drop off donations at the Cameron County site located at the county annex at 1390 W. Expressway 83, San Benito.
