WHO WILL RULE THE ROOST?: Battle of the Birdies highlights the week ahead

With the high school football season now in the rearview mirror here in the Valley, basketball is in full swing and for area girls teams, district play gets underway tonight.

Here are five things to watch for this week:

1. THE BIRDIES BATTLE

The Harlingen Lady Cardinals and Harlingen South Lady Hawks open District 32-6A action against each other at 7:30 tonight at the Lady Hawks gym. The 16-6 Lady Cardinals come into the contest riding high after a big 55-52 double overtime win over Edinburg High this past Friday. Meanwhile, the 11-6 Lady Hawks also come into the game riding the momentum of a 65-39 victory over McAllen High last week. League action continues for both squads later in the week as the Lady Cards host Brownsville Rivera on Friday while the Lady Hawks are at Los Fresnos.

2. HAWKS VS. COYOTES:

The Harlingen South Hawks kick off their final week of non-district play tonight by hosting La Joya. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. prior to the Lady Cardinals-Lady Hawks game. This past weekend, the Hawks scored an impressive consolation championship win at the Hidalgo Pirate Tournament. The Hawks beat Brownsville Pace in the title match on Saturday, 55-33. Later in the week, the Hawks are entered in the PSJA ISD Tournament.

3. HARLINGEN VS. McALLEN MEMORIAL:

The Harlingen Cardinals host McAllen Memorial at 7:30 tonight. The Cards enter the contest riding high after winning the championship at the 86th Annual C.E. Vail Tournament in La Feria this past Saturday. The Cards cruised through the tournament with a perfect 6-0 mark and beat Corpus Christi Miller 60-42 in the title game. Like the Hawks, the Cards are also entered in the PSJA ISD Tournament this weekend and begin play Thursday.

4. LIONETTES OPEN LEAGUE PLAY:

The La Feria Lionettes begin District 32-4A action tonight against Hidalgo. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Lady Pirates gym in Hidalgo. The Lionettes continue league play on Friday when they host Zapata, also at 6:30 p.m.

5. WARRIORS VS. LIONS:

The 2017 state finalist Santa Rosa Warriors are still trying to adjust to life in the post Leo Lara era. Last Tuesday the Warriors fell to Brownsville Hanna in non-district action and this past weekend the Warriors had to settle for a berth in the fifth-place semifinals of the Hidalgo Tournament where they got crushed by San Antonio Roosevelt 75-35 on Saturday. The Warriors will try to turn things around tonight when they take on La Feria on road. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Lions gym. The Warriors conclude the week with a home game against Weslaco IDEA at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
