Local youth doing his part to help others

HARLINGEN — Police were in their squad car on patrol when they found a young boy selling his toys to raise money for the annual “Shop with a Cop” event recently.

Harlingen resident Ryan Ortiz, 5, had permission from his mother, Miracle Flores, to be outside his home selling some of his toys to help other boys and girls in need for Christmas.

Ryan had his basketball hoop, high-chair and stroller and more for sale.

Harlingen police said they were honored to find Ryan selling his toys in front of his home for the third annual “Shop with a Cop.”

The Harlingen Police Department started “Shop with a Cop” in 2015 with a goal to bring some Christmas joy to those children who are less fortunate.

The children are identified by their schools and their names are submitted to the department.

And on a Dec. 20, the selected students will take the day off of school to spend the morning shopping with a cop and enjoying lunch together and more.

Last year, 51 police officers paired up with 51 students from the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District.

And the toys flew off the shelves.

Officers and the students got to know each other as they strolled through Target shopping for Christmas gifts.

According to Ryan’s mother, her son hopes to have enough money raised to sponsor two children.

Police said Ryan’s caring heart is an example for all of us to follow, and his selflessness and love are exactly what this world needs.
