New exercise equipment coming to Rio Hondo park

RIO HONDO — Getting fit may come easier for residents with a gym pass, and willing to drive out of town to exercise.

But that is all going to change for those who don’t want to leave town for a workout.

The local park will soon receive new exercise equipment as the city plans the beginning stages of the installation project to start by this week.

“It’s going to be real nice addition to our park and our walking trail,” said Ben Medina, Rio Hondo city administrator. “This is part of our wellness program for our citizens.”

New Year’s resolution-makers who plan to lose weight or gain muscle will be able to reach their goals at the Rio Hondo City-County Park.

Medina said the city had been saving money and looking for a grant to help pay for the addition to the park.

He said a grant from the UTSA Wellness finally came through.

Medina said the equipment is being paid for with the grant worth $27,057.

“We will start building the pad next week,” Medina said recently. “We are always striving to have better health for our citizens.”

Medina said hopefully residents will utilize the equipment and use the park and walking trails for their benefit.

He said there are about five pieces of outdoor equipment the park will receive.

Purchase of the weight station for the park was approved by the City Council on Nov. 14.

“People can go and exercise whenever they want,” Medina said. “There will be weights, elliptical machines, bench press and some leg exercise machines.”
