Authorities identify drowning victim

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Cameron County Park Rangers identified the man who drowned Tuesday morning at the Isla Blanca jetties as 64-year-old Joel Moreno of El Paso.

Moreno died at approximately 12:45 p.m. at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, authorities said.

Moreno was fishing with Lorenzo Carlos Garza, 68, also from El Paso, on Tuesday morning.

Cameron County Park Rangers Chief Horacio Zamora said Wednesday that investigators believe a large wave may have knocked the men into the water shortly after 11 a.m.

A park ranger and several concerned citizens pulled one of the men to the shore, and later saw an unresponsive male floating in the water, according to a press release. They also recovered that man from the water, authorities said.

Garza and Moreno were taken to the hospital.
