Lyford sets aside time to honor veterans

LYFORD — Their colors may be green and yellow, but yesterday Lyford CISD represented the red, white and blue.

The home of patriotism definitely lived up to its slogan during its annual Veterans Day Ceremony.

Veterans, families and students, bundled in jackets and scarves, filled the Bulldog Stadium during Lyford CISD’s 29 th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony.

The opening and closing remarks were given by district superintendent Eduardo Infante.

“Veterans Day is important to us because we want to make sure our veterans and our Gold Star families know they are appreciated,” Infante said.

This is the third and final year Lyford CISD has been recognized as a Vietnam War Commemorative Partner by the Department of Defense Vietnam War Commemoration.

According to Infante, Lyford CISD has entered into three partnerships with the Department of Defense to recognize and pay tribute to those who served in wars 50 years ago.

So far, the district has partnered to commemorate World War II, the Korean War and now the Vietnam War.

“We believe it’s important to teach our young people about the importance about honor, duty and patriotism,” Infante said.

The ceremony paid special tribute to Vietnam war veterans and honored seven Gold Star Families of local soldiers who lost their lives during the war.

Vietnam veteran, Sgt. Enoch “Mac” McClain based out of California, served as the keynote speaker.

“This is the most patriotic city I have ever seen in my life,” McClain said.

The Brownsville Hanna Army JROTC took part in the ceremony by presenting the colors while the Lyford Bulldog band played in the background.

Warriors United in Arms, an organization based out of Brownsville attended and presented a battered flag that was preserved from Vietnam.

The ceremony noted as being one of the biggest Veterans’ Day ceremonies in the Valley, concluded with a reception held in the high school gymnasium.
