City of Brownsville Public Health Director Arturo Rodriguez addressed the city commission Tuesday night about what his department plans to do to minimize the illegal dumping of tires and other debris.

According to the PowerPoint presentation Rodriguez showed to the commission, there have been 605 cases so far this year of people disposing things illegally on different properties. He also pointed out that it costs the city $56.90 per trip to go and pick up the tires and other materials that weren’t disposed of properly.

Rodriguez asked the commission to set a budget from the city’s plastic bag fee funds to combat this issue through the purchase of surveillance cameras and other methods to minimize the illegal dumping.

After some discussion with the commission, Rodriguez was authorized to use $200,000 from the plastic bag fee funds and to work with other city departments to see how they can fix this issue together.
