One week remains in the regular season and in District 32-6A the playoff picture is almost fully complete.
On Friday night, Weslaco East, Brownsville Hanna and San Benito all locked up playoff spots. Los Fresnos, meanwhile, clinched the playoff spot with a win on Saturday over Brownsville Rivera.
The final week of the regular season will determine seedings for the bi-district round.
Hounds clinch a share of 32-6A crown: The San Benito Greyhounds’ offense was at full force Friday night and with the Battle of the Arroyo on the horizon, the Hounds kept their focus and took care of Weslaco 64-14 on Friday to capture at least a share of the district title.
QB Erick Retta continued to shine, throwing for four touchdowns. He now has 18 TDs through the air this season. On the night, Retta was flawless going 12 for 16 for 250 yards.
Retta connected with fellow senior Isaiah Trevino for a pair of scores from 57 and 9 yards out.
The Hounds also saw their defense chip in with a pick six from John Gonzales.
San Benito will now prepare for the Battle of the Arroyo at home. A win would secure the district title outright.
Cards drop third straight, miss postseason: For the first time since 1999, the Cardinals will not be in the playoffs. The absence from the postseason is a first for head coach Manny Gomez, who has qualified for the playoffs in each of his 10 seasons.
The Cardinals dropped their third straight Friday night against Brownsville Hanna. The Eagles’ defense held the Cards offense to a season-low 195 total yards.
Harlingen will now prepare for the Battle of the Arroyo. A win for the Cards would send them into the offseason with confidence heading into 2018.
South aiming for strong finish: Despite a strong effort against Weslaco East, the Hawks are still in search for their first district win. Week 11 will provide that opportunity for the seniors to end their high school careers with a win as they host Brownsville Rivera, which is also winless in league play.
Both Derrick Delgado and Brady Bennett checked in solid outings through the air. Delgado reeled in a season-high seven catches for 130 yards and a score while Bennett caught four passes for 59 yards and a score.
With running backs Jorge Alicea and Emilio Quiroz sidelined with injuries, Corban Hendrick led the backfield with 13 attempts and 82 yards rushing.
David Torres aired it out against a stout East defense. Torres went 23 for 36 with 239 yards. The Hawks’ offense was able to post 378 total yards.
