Laguna Vista to host first 5K/10K run event

LAGUNA VISTA — The town is inviting the entire Valley to take part in its first 5K/10K run.

The city will be hosting its first 5K/10K run event Saturday at Roloff Park.

Proceeds from the event will go to support the Laguna Madre Youth Center.

Previously the Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Madre, the organization has since restructured and rebranded themselves, keeping the same core values and goals.

City manager Rolando Vela said the organization that caters to the coastal towns has a list of children interested in joining but due to insufficient funds, they have been put on a wait list.

“The Laguna Madre Youth Center is in need of much-needed funds to support our local children,” Vela said.

According to Vela, this is the first running event the city will host.

“This is an opportunity to promote exercise and wellness while supporting our local children,” Vela said.

He said the city is encouraging people interested in the event to register online at its Athlete Guild site.

Vela said his goal is to have more than 200 people participate and is encouraging running groups across the Valley to register.

“We are in need of businesses that want to sponsor the aid stations and provide water and Gatorade to the participants and we are in need of school and community organizations that want to volunteer and provide support at packet pickup and on the event day,” Vela said.

Finisher medals and shirts will be issued to the first 200 participants to register.
