TSA unveils new security checks at airport

HARLINGEN — The Transportation Security Administration will hold a media event today to explain new security screening at Valley International Airport.

The new regulations will require passengers preparing to board to place all electronics larger than a mobile phone in bins for X-Ray screening.

The new security measures for tablet and notebook computers will go into effect Friday.

Testing of the new security screen began this spring at a dozen or so airports in the United States, including Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport.

TSA officials say planning for the new procedures has been going on for about two years, and is not linked to any imminent terrorist threat.
