Hundreds walk against breast cancer

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Assistant City Manager Darla Jones was one of the many who helped turn Padre Boulevard pink.

She and the more than 200 people who participated in the 14th Annual Walk for Women were dressed in pink yesterday.

The Walk for Women Event began at 10 a.m. from Orca Circle Drive south to West Amberjack Street. It wrapped up a weekend of breast cancer awareness activities on the Island.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk has brought the community together every year to support families and friends affected by the disease.

The weekend event started Friday with a night of casino games and an auction at Louie’s Backyard. On Saturday participants competed in a fishing tournament for trophies and awards.

The event benefits women in the lower Rio Grande Valley by providing financial, prosthetic and diagnostic support as they battle breast cancer.
