CATS VS DOGS: Weslaco East-San Benito highlights Week 6 as VMS’s Game of the Week

Both the San Benito Greyhounds and Weslaco East Wildcats opened the District 32-6A slate last week with wins as the Hounds held off Los Fresnos 43-33 and the Wildcats belted Weslaco High 35-7. The two now will take on each other this Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week.

Against Los Fresnos, the Hounds (4-0, 1-0) were led by senior running back Tyrone Harper, who rushed for 155 yards on 25 carries for three touchdowns, and senior quarterback Erick Retta, who was 14 of 19 for 139 yards and a score.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats (3-1, 1-0) were led by senior QB Richard LeFevre, who passed for 145 yards and three scores. The Cats also rushed for more than 220 yards thanks to a stable of running backs, including senior Roy Pedraza, who led the way with 84 yards on 25 carries and a score.

The Hounds beat the Cats last season 25-19 at San Benito.

BIG RED LOOKS TO STAY HOT

After an emotional win over Harlingen South in Bird Bowl XXV, the Harlingen Cardinals look to win their fourth in a row when they host Brownsville Rivera on Friday.

In their win over the Hawks, the Cards (3-0, 1-0) were led by senior QB Daniel Ramirez, who passed for 197 yards on 10 of 14 passing for three scores. As for the Raiders (1-3, 0-1), they are looking for snap a three-game losing skid as they have now won a game since a 35-14 Week One win over Brownsville Porter. They have since lost games to Brownsville Veterans, PSJA and, most recently, Brownsville Hanna.

HAWKS LOOK TO REBOUND

After winning their season opener over McAllen High on Sept. 1, the Harlingen South Hawks have yet to return to the win column as they’ve dropped games to PSJA, Edinburg North and Harlingen. If the Hawks (1-3, 0-1) hope to avoid a fourth loss in a row, however, they must beat Los Fresnos (2-2, 0-1) on the road Friday.

Against Harlingen on Friday, the Hawks struggled with turnovers and their normally stout defense simply could not contain the Cardinals as it gave up more than 300 total yards. Meanwhile, the Falcons started off slowly against San Benito, but came on strong and eventually made it a game on Friday before the Hound pulled away in the end.
