Local music benefit to help with Harvey relief

MERCEDES — Local artists are standing up for Texas and humanity this weekend to raise money for hurricane relief by rocking the microphone with music.

Their concert, “United we Stand for Texas,” will benefit the people struggling from the recent hurricane devastation.

The event is free. People can donate to help the hurricane victims with a canned food drive or money for charity.

“We are taking donations.” said Kid Zapper, AKA, Armando Saldana of Mercedes and event organizer. “We will find a representative and present the funds.”

Saldana said money donations and checks will be donated to the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

A truck will be available to leave non-perishable goods that will be sent to help the people in need in Texas and Mexico.

The event is going to be live from noon to 8 p.m.

The concert and family activities will take place under the pavilion on Saturday at the Mercedes Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show grounds.

Area music artists ranging from rock-n-roll, Tejano and conjunto will be performing throughout the day.

Some of the artists include: The Bloodhounds, Frankie Caballero and Cameron Rock and Kid Zapper will be hosting the show and collaborating with all the bands.

“They are all Valley bands united to help the cause,” Saldana said.

“There is going to be a car show, pony rides, live music, and bouncers for the kids.”

He also said there will be an art show, and area karate kids will be demonstrating martial arts.

Kid Zapper is a nominee for best new artist of the year at this year’s Tejano Music Awards.

The event is sponsored by L&F Distributors, Elsa Foundation and Nuevo Barrio Studios and Kid Zapper.

“I’m going to try to get the whole Valley involved,” Saldana said. “In a short period of time I have been getting calls that they want to help and be involved.”
