Tropical Storm Katia forms off Mexico

HARLINGEN — A closely watched disturbance south of Texas in the Bay of Campeche has finally organized into Tropical Storm Katia.

National Hurricane Center meteorologists said this morning the storm was 105 miles east of Tampico, Mexico, with sustained winds of 40 mph.

The slow-moving tropical system is expected to move southward and eventually roll into Veracruz state by early Saturday morning before dissipating into a tropical depression.

Katia poses no threat to the Texas gulf coast.
