Forecasters say the system is likely to become a tropical depression or even a tropical storm whose name would be Katia as early as Wednesday.

The system has 60 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in 48 and 70 percent in the next five days and is expected to make landfall in Veracruz.

In the meantime, Hurricane Irma is expected to head toward the Florida Straits by the weekend and then turn north toward the rest of the state.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville says we can expect to feel the impact of the category 5 hurricane on South Padre Island Thursday and Friday, with more noticeable surf over the weekend.

Dangerous rip currents will become stronger by Thursday, peaking over the weekend.
