South looks to soar: Hawks-Bears highlights Week 2 as Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week

The Harlingen South Hawks looked impressive in their 31-24 Week 1 win over McAllen High this past Friday. Now they’ll try to up their record to 2-0 for a second straight season when they travel to Pharr on Thursday to take on PSJA High in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.

Last year the Hawks beat the Bears 35-27 thanks to a 372-yard rushing performance. However, all the running backs that helped tote the ball in that victory graduated during the offseason. But in Friday’s win, senior back Jorge Alicea made up for any lost talent by rushing for 225 yards on 19 carries for three scores, including a 33-yard TD run on the the Hawks’ opening drive.

As for the Bears, they also enter Friday’s contest 1-0 after a 54-13 trouncing of Donna North. Led by junior QB Trey Guajardo, the Bears are extremely dangerous and much improved from last season. In their loss to the Hawks in 2016, Guajardo passed for 104 yards and a TD, and rushed for another 128 yards.

BIG RED LOOKS TO REBOUND

After a disappointing Week 1 loss to Mission Veterans, the Harlingen Cardinals will try to avoid an 0-2 start as they take on Laredo United South on Thursday at Laredo. Last year the Panthers belted the Cards 30-13 at Boggus Stadium. The Panthers enter Thursday’s game also 0-1 after losing to San Antonio Wagner 41-28.

HOUNDS HEAD NORTH

The San Benito Greyhounds had a close call on Friday, but in the end walked away with a 23-20 win over Laredo United. They’ll now take the show on the road at San Antonio East Central on Friday. Last season the Hounds downed the Hornets 49-28. The Hornets come into this weekend’s game 0-1 after a 28-0 loss to San Marcos.

CATS FINALLY GET TO PLAY

The Rio Hondo Bobcats were denied their Week 1 game against Sinton thanks to Hurricane Harvey’s affect on the Costal Bend. They finally get to hit the gridiron on Friday when they travel to La Joya to take on the Juarez-Lincoln Huskies. Last season the Cats beat the Huskies 27-14. The Huskies enter Friday’s game 1-0 after a 35-7 win over PSJA Memorial.
