Humane Society helping animals devastated by Harvey

HARLINGEN — The Humane Society is looking to help.

The society has ongoing funding issues, but in times of need, they are extending a hand to help animal shelters in areas that were affected by the hurricane.

Since Hurricane Harvey made landfall, devastating towns on the coastal areas of Texas, the Harlingen Humane Society has been making frequent trips north to help out.

The society has already saved numerous animals whose shelters had flooded.

So far, the society has rescued nine dogs and 18 cats from Goliad and 28 dogs and eight cats from Refugio.

The animals were brought down to the Valley and are currently in local shelters and foster homes until the society can find a permanent solution.

HHS Director Kim Waurnauk left to Rockport yesterday to assess the situation in that area.

The society had to wait until they were given clearance by local law enforcement to enter the area and help out.

According to Waurnauk, there are also cows and horses that have been reportedly stuck in muddied areas.

Stock trailers will be in the area to help her take the animals capable of moving to a local farm in hopes of finding their owners.

Harlingen Humane Society Board President Pat Turman-White will accompany Waurnauk tomorrow.

Turman-White, along with a handful of volunteers, will take the two and a half hour drive to Rockport to help pick up stray dogs and bring them down to the Valley.

The society is looking for people willing to foster the animals they bring back here.

The society is stretched when it comes to space to house the animals.

They are warning people interested in fostering they could be looking at keeping the animals for weeks or months before somewhere more permanent can be found.

Those who can’t foster but still want to help can donate a number of items that the society needs such as dog and cat food and cleaning products.

Monetary donations can be given through the Harlingen Humane Society Facebook account or drop off any of the items listed below at the Humane Society in Harlingen.
