Run with the Heroes event slated

HARLINGEN — Ever wondered if you could out-run the police, and get away with it?

Well, here is everyone’s chance.

The Harlingen Police Department’s 3rd Annual Run with the Heroes RGV 5K Run/Walk is slated for Sept. 30.

On site registration starts at 6 a.m. and the event will start promptly at 8 a.m. in beautiful downtown Harlingen at West Jackson Avenue and South A Street.

Proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics, Humane Society of Harlingen and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness.

“It’s not about who can beat who, it’s about running as a cohesive community,” said Jaime Palofox, Harlingen PD sergeant and event organizer.

“It’s not an event to compete against the police, it’s an event about running side-by-side.”

The 5K is a 3.2 mile event.

Local bands will be playing along the road and there will be stations to take a pit-stop to rest and get a drink.

“This is my first time organizing the event,” Palofox said.

He said he has participated as a runner in the event in the past, but was tasked with helping organize the event this year.

“I average the run in about 27 minutes,” Palofox said. “Father time has taken his toll.”

However, he did say the PD is very excited about the event and reaching out to the community to participate.

“We are super excited about the event,” Palofox said.

“Come out and recognize our day-to-day-heroes.”

Police officers, federal agents, firefighters, EMS personnel, other first responders, and the dedicated brave men and women of our U.S. military will be present.

“We are saluting our local heroes, which are our police, firefighters and our first responders,” Palofox said.

“It’s not just a run, run, run, but you can take your time and enjoy the event.”

Last year’s run started off with more than 800 runners registered and has turned into a great running, family and community event.

“It is hard to believe we are preparing for our third annual run with the Heroes RGV 5K Run/Walk,” said Police Chief Jeffry Adickes.
